Simultaneous interpretation is a complex activity of cognitive processing integrating a series of interdependent processes that allows the listener to receive the translation of the original speech in real time.
This activity, characterised by the uninterrupted rendition of the speech uttered in the language of departure in the language of arrival, is begun when the interpreter hears part of the uttered phrase by a speaker. While having barely received this segment, he must begin to interpret it and render it in the arrival language. At the same time, while he is still occupied with vocalizing this segment, he receives the second unit of meaning, and must be able to retain it in his memory. Additionally, while he translates the first segment and retains the second in his memory, the interpreter verifies that his rendering in the arrival language is grammatically and lexically correct.
